This year’s iteration of the global G20 Summit of 2023 was held and hosted in India as the country is becoming a major part of the world economy and is a big powerhouse in terms of all the various metrics that signify a developing country. It is a big honour for India and a spotlight on our industrial sector signifying how we can create a more sustainable environment keeping in mind the need for the presence and the demand of the future. Ballice got a chance to show the innovations with its Water Cooler.
The world is in a dire condition currently as there is an advent of newer industries every day that are generating much more pollution than ever before.
G20 had various specific branches to tackle various problems that the world is facing regarding the quality of the environment and its degrading trend. One of the major topics of concern this year and in years past has been plastic pollution which is at the forefront of every country’s list of priorities.
Why Is It Necessary To Reduce Plastic Generation?
Numerous plastic surveys have signified that the world demand for plastic has only been increasing as the years go by even though the world is much more aware of the disadvantages of plastic usage in today’s world. It is known that poorer and developing countries are bigger contributors to plastic pollution per capita. Developed countries find it easier to make better use of the polluting elements through reuse and recycling capabilities.
The below-given data estimate on plastic emissions gives us an idea of the distribution for most countries around the world. The data is courtesy of the researchers at World In Data – https://ourworldindata.org/plastic-pollution

How Did The Event Approach The Theme Of Plastic Positivity?
IIT (Indian Institute of Technology) Roorkee conducted the Uttarakhand Plastics Summit 2023 to tackle this issue at the ground level. The event was organized in compliance with the Uttarakhand Pollution Control Board on October 10th, 2023 at the AC Auditorium. A number of significant figures in the manufacturing and development industry attended the event, of which Ballice was also a part.
PM Narendra Modi has asked the industry and academic sector to direct their focus towards a plastic-positive nation and adopt better practices. The respected figures present at the event were Professor K. K. Pant, Director of IIT Roorkee, along with Shri Mihir Bannerji, the Secretary-General of the Plastics Packaging R&D Centre.
The summit was a clash of ideas of various company executives who wanted to provide their solution for the plastic crisis. A number of events were organized to incorporate that allowed the participants to do the same. Some of these were –
- Technological Exhibition – Each company present provided their individual advancements by showcasing their products in the exhibition. Startups created by IIT Alumni, faculty, and other local enterprises presented their innovations in the task in line with the theme of the event.
- Experts Talk – A very important seminar session with Industry giants from all over the country was conducted. The cusp of the talk was how an enterprise is supposed to manage and balance its responsibilities to society while making leaps in the business sector. One of the most important parts of the events as it is a guide to the future.
- I-STEM & Patent Filing – Indian Science, Technology, Engineering Facilities Map provides researchers in India assistance that is needed for R&D Work. It also provided a Patent Filing facility for the most ingenious innovations.
- Extended Producer Responsibility under CPCB – EPR is a set of guidelines that are supposed to be followed by each and every importer, producer, and brand-owner to make sure that the plastic waste generated by their industrial processes is properly handled of through recycling, re-use, and end of life disposal. A walkthrough of the steps that need to be adopted in industrial processes was provided to all company executives.
A conclave of all these activities developed into an experience of discovery and learning.

Why Are Industries So Dependent On Plastic Polymers?
The biggest counterpoint for the brands to make a change in their practices is the cost incurred when reducing the amount of plastic dependability. Plastic is one of the cheapest packaging materials and also a material used to increase structural integrity with high durability and flexibility. It might be difficult for startups and other low-revenue enterprises to increase their running cost. That is why regular efforts in the development of alternative materials that may someday fully replace the plastics that exist are ongoing. Apart from that switching to materials of different structural integrity is also advisable at slightly increased costs.
The age that we live in experiences massive improvements in technology, advancement in efficiency, and innovations in sustainable methodologies. It is the duty of not only the industry giants but also of each and every member of this planet to make efforts to reduce the waste that they individually generate on a daily basis.
The more focus is brought to this topic the more manufacturers and customers are willing to change their practices in the future. We hope that a glimpse through the events of this year’s Uttarakhand Plastics Summit has shed light on how crucial it is for us to change our ways and be more environmentally friendly.
